Quirky bedroom decoration ideas

The bedroom is by far the most intimate and personal room in the home. It’s a place where we can rest, relax and wind down after a long day, so making it the perfect retreat is important. But creating your dream bedroom doesn’t need to involve a full blown renovation — a few simple accessories and the right lighting can make a world of difference.

To help tweak your bedroom and make it perfect for you, we looked into some fascinating decorating ideas with an unconventional twist.

Bag yourself some beautiful bedding

You can transform your bed in one easy move with some quirky covers, but why be restricted by the idea of bedding coming as a set? Mix up your pillowcases and duvet cover for a more eclectic look.

If you’re a dab hand at arts and crafts, you could even make your own bedding — that way you know it’s definitely a one-off and a little piece of you that no one else can replicate.

Adding beautiful throws and blankets is also a great way to change the look of your bedroom quickly and easily. If you’re going for originality, try not to shop in the mainstream high street stores and take a look online or in boutiques for something different.

Transform your bed with a canopy

Adding a beautiful canopy to your bed will change the whole room in an instant and make it a lovely, serene place to relax and sleep.

There are lots of bed canopies that suspend from the wall or ceiling, and they come in all kinds of colours and materials. They can drape elegantly over your bed, creating an air of grandeur with heavy luxurious materials, or create a more delicate look with a floaty mosquito net-inspired design. It all depends on your taste.

Create a unique space with new lighting

Playing around with lighting in your bedroom can create a magical feel. Subtle cool blue lighting can give a zen, spa-like ambiance to a room, or you could go totally off the wall with a wacky light fitting for a more dramatic outcome.

Using LED strips along the walls is a great way to achieve a modern, interesting feel with plenty of character, while a disco ball will scatter pretty light all over your walls, floor and ceiling. For a really outlandish look, a disco light in different colours is a fantastically fun way to illuminate the boudoir!

Stop staring into empty space — decorate your ceiling

There are few things more boring than lying in bed staring at the ceiling when you’re trying to get to sleep, so why not say goodbye to blank white space and decorate your ceiling?

Few people are brave enough to touch their ceiling when decorating, so this is a sure-fire way to achieve something new, exciting and different.

Try covering your ceiling with carpet or vinyl flooring in an interesting pattern or bold colour for an original (and slightly bonkers) interior style.

However, if you’re being brave enough to decorate the ceiling, why not do something truly amazing, like creating your very own blanket of stars? Or giving Michelangelo a run for his money with a fab, over-the-top mural featuring all your favourite things?

Mix it up with a few vintage elements

Adding a few vintage elements to the mix — such as a retro colour palette or a wooden rocking-chair — will not only add charm, but you can be almost certain that your bedroom won’t be the same as anyone else’s.

To achieve that truly old-fashioned feel, why not head over to a second-hand store or antique shop? You never know what kind of enchanting, hidden treasures are waiting to be discovered.

There are lots of ways you can make your bedroom a place that is truly your own. If you’d want some more inspiration or advice on interior design, take a look at our other inspirational posts in our home transformation hub.
