Sparkling seas, lazy days and long, warm evenings – the restorative power of a Mediterranean holiday is on many of our minds at this time of year. It’s obviously been on the minds of the interior design world too, as this season you can bring some of the laid-back romance and easy style of the Med into your home to enjoy all year round. Bedrooms especially are a perfect place to capture a little Mediterranean spirit in the comfort of your own home. Think the unrivaled glamour of Cannes, where high-style comes as standard, whether you’re in a boutique hotel or kicking back on board your yacht.

Colours of the Med

The current Mediterranean look is eclectic but sophisticated, with influences drawn from Europe and North Africa. Lattice-work screens evoke soft sun falling through the windows of a Moroccan riad, while furniture is low and simple for a touch of pool-side glamour. Think natural materials like rattan, wicker and unpainted wood, with a few notes of copper for that all-important warmth and glow. The key thing to keeping the look more luxury travel and less budget airline is to keep your colour palette simple. We’ve seen many such schemes using a grey backdrop – for flooring and soft furnishings – lifted with a couple of rich colours like ochre or indigo for a jewel-like tone. A simple grey laminate floor, or one which gives a typically Mediterranean tile-effect, will create a perfect base on which to build the rest of the scheme.

Beds fit for a boudoir

This is a look to have fun with, and you can’t create a Mediterranean boudoir without a fabulous centre-piece bed. Go for a super-sized contemporary metal bed frame in a simple shape, dressed luxuriously with white Egyptian cotton sheets and Ikat-print pillows and throws – the perfect spot to sleep, read, write and daydream. Or for a really glamorous note what about a four-poster? Choose from metal or a dark wood frame and drape with lengths of light voile material that could easily be billowing in a warm sea breeze.

Add some softness

For soft-furnishings go for simple, rustic prints like Ikats or ombres, in a mix of light and floaty and thick and natural materials. Voiles at the window and cushions in velvets mixed with hard-wearing linens will create texture and interest, and leave you plenty of room to add those one or two key colour notes. A layered patchwork of rugs on top of your grey floor will also add comfort – go for neutral colours and patterns in thick, tactile finishes.

Layer your lighting

For a really sexy boudoir scheme lighting is absolutely essential. For a relaxed and intimate atmosphere add mood lighting to side tables and even corners of the room at floor level. You can go for table lamps in cut-metal that spread dappled light across the room, or even candles in out-sized storm lanterns. And don’t forget a stunning centrepiece pendant in this season’s must-have copper finish. Now all that is left is to dim the lights and sail away to sunny climes in your dreams…
