Dark luxe: October’s interior trends by Diana Civil

Dark Luxe is one of the key trends at Carpetright this season. This dramatic style is all about teaming deep dark shades on floors, walls and furnishings and offsetting these impact backdrops with highlights of bronze, gold, copper and shimmering metallic finishes to create a look that really does have that luxurious 24 carat Midas touch.

Decorating your room with a dark colour can be scary but be brave and there is no doubt that the deep shades will add drama to room schemes and create a confident style statement in your home. Contrary to belief, these shades don’t have to make a room look smaller; in a dark room the corners seem to disappear so you can’t see the boundaries of the space making it look seamless and less box-like whilst creating an instant cosy and inviting look. The key to success is to follow one of two routes which both create impact but in different ways – a harmonious scheme where your furnishings blend in tone or a contrasting scheme where your furnishings offset each other.

In a harmonious scheme, walls, floors, furniture and even ceilings could all be dark and dramatic but the tones should work well together to create a seamless look. This approach works just as well for either traditional or contemporary schemes but you do need to add bold accents to break up and add interest to the overall look of the room.

With the current luxe trend, metallics are the key ingredient adding shimmer and shine and are the perfect contrast to the dark shades of the moment from smoky greys, glamorous purples, inky blues and even the most dramatic shades of black. The metallics inject highlights into the scheme creating pools of light and sparkle against the shade.

In a contrasting scheme, you might have one key feature, for example a black floor, which contrasts with the décor on walls and furniture. Your flooring will create the style statement and adds the wow factor to the room. For maximum impact go for dark ceiling and walls then team with an eye popping shade of colour on the floor. Whatever route you choose it’s all about getting the balance right and choosing what is right for your lifestyle and personality.

Top Tip: One factor to bear in mind is that dark colours absorb loads of natural light so ensure you have good supplementary lighting in your room, not only for ambient light, but more importantly for practicality with an assortment of task and mood lighting.

When deciding on your flooring start by choosing a colour and material that suits both your style of room and your lifestyle. Carpet is a luxurious option and ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways but plain dark shades, whilst they won’t show the dirt as easily as pale colours, do show lint and fluff so require regular vacuuming to keep them looking their best. In a busy family room or hallway opt for a textured or patterned carpet that is a more practical option and will add interest to the scheme.

Vinyls and laminates in dark shades are also on the increase in the popularity stakes, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where they are perfect for making a dramatic statement often in a small space.  Whether sleek plain designs, bold patterns or glimmering metallics; they can create extremely varied looks from stark and contemporary to traditional period styles and are an extremely quick and easy option to update or refresh the look of a room in an instant. Dark toned woods and laminates are also a big trend as deep shades give an appearance of texture and dimension that lighter woods can’t emulate. The light that shines on dark wood flooring makes the boards look uniquely different and extremely luxurious and lustrous.

With a Dark Luxe scheme, accessories really are that all important factor that brings the look together and adds those essential finishing touches. The hottest look of the season, metallics are a must from cosy copper and cool chrome to burnished bronze and brass and can be seen everywhere forging its way from high end to high street. From lighting and linens to ceramics and cushions, they are perfect, not only for incorporating luxurious features into your colour scheme but for adding interest around the room with a variety of shape, tone and texture. The mix of metals inject shimmering accents for light and shade in a scheme.
