Create a cosy Winter home – interior trends by Diana Civil

With the chill of autumn in the air you don’t always have to turn up the heat. Transform your home from summer cool to winter warm with our quick and easy tricks of the trade.

For starters, decorate with rich colour – this season deep dark colours rule from the rustic country tones of brick and rust, to the dramatic theatrical palette of inky indigo blues – mixed with copper and metallic hues they are perfect for adding the latest trend looks to your home.

Keep out those chills this winter by layering your bedding and switching your duvet for a higher tog rating  – the higher the tog the more the warmth -– after all a cosy bedroom is a winter essential!  Out with the cool summer cottons and in with luxurious linens and cosy quilts in a mix of tactile textures  This seasons style hero’s are chunky throws in oversized knit and faux fur –perfect for snuggling around chilly feet.

There’s nothing worse than a cold hard floor underfoot in the middle of winter – Investing in a wall to wall fitted carpet adds colour, texture and pattern to your rooms as well as warmth and insulation underfoot.  Always team with a quality underlay as this will also aid insulation and will help prolong the life of the carpet.  For a luxurious feel underfoot opt for a deep shag pile carpet or in areas of high traffic a practical twist or velvet pile. As a really quick cosy cover up for floors choose rugs and runners. They add an instant splash of colour and pattern and can be moved around from room to room too making them extremely practical.

Insulate against chills and draughts by covering windows and doors with heavy curtains.  Floor length styles make a dramatic statement and for maximum warmth choose quality styles which are interlined.  During the winter around 40% of heat is lost through windows so curtains can save you money in the long run because as well as making a style statement they will prevent heat from escaping from the room.

Cosy up every room by introducing  warm winter soft furnishings – choose throws and rugs in tactile textures such as cashmere, velvet, wool and faux fur – they add an instant cosy look as well as bring new colour and pattern to your scheme to give your room a seasonal update in an instant.

Add the glow of firelight – nothing beats the cosy warmth of a real fire.  As well as a focal point in the room it is a great way of adding a comforting flickering glow and ambience in your room and keeping the heating costs down..  For an alternative to an open fire why not consider a woodburner or multifuel stove which are much like an open fire but with more heat efficiency.  No fireplace? – don’t worry you can buy faux fires that look just as good as the real thing.

Create a soft glow with candlelight – it’s the perfect way of creating an intimate atmosphere in your home.  You could choose from the latest winter scents such as cinnamon, nutmeg or apple for a wonderful warm winter fragrance in each room.
