Lucy Alexander: How I chose the flooring for my home

I’m very excited about my new role as Home Expert for Carpetright.  It’s been great fun so far and I’ve loved sharing my knowledge and ideas with the store colleagues and customers.  As I have recently been renovating my own home I needed flooring – and where better to choose it from than Carpetright?  There is a lot to love about Carpetright.  The experts on hand instore to help out when you’re choosing your flooring are so knowledgeable about the different categories that you know you are in safe hands.  They don’t push you in the direction of what is best for them to sell but always what’s best for your needs. There’s the value for money of course with varying levels of pricing depending on what you want.  And not forgetting the fabulous expert who came to my house free of charge to measure up making sure I didn’t buy too much.  I was very glad about that! But what I love most is the selection available – I really was spoilt for choice!

Branded carpets

I knew that I wanted carpet in my hall stairs and landing so that was a good start, and the choice available was amazing. It was easier to narrow down once I decided a loop carpet was right for me and I knew I wanted a natural look and feel in a neutral shade.  Even then, there was an abundance to choose from but eventually I settled on a Westex carpet and their Briar range fitted the bill perfectly.  I needed something tough as there’s lots of coming and going in my house and the range is made from 100% pure new wool which is known to create a real warm and cosy feel, wherever it is fitted.  It’s also 100% biodegradable and sourced from renewable materials, always a plus point for me.  The 3 ply yarn makes for hard-wearing carpet that’s suitable for use anywhere – even the stairs – and it means that the loops won’t crush or pull so the carpet won’t flatten when it’s walked on.  The Briar range of carpets is available in lots of neutral colours and I chose Honeycomb as it looks lovely and will complement pretty much all colour schemes, which means it will see me through if I choose to change the décor.

I was so pleased with how my carpet looked once it had been fitted; it gives my hall and stairs a contemporary feel and feels lovely under my feet – my home instantly felt cosier too.  I definitely made the right choice.

Engineered wood flooring

I also needed some wood flooring for my downstairs living spaces as I don’t think you can beat the natural look of wood.  I want the effect of real wood but I don’t have time to maintain a hardwood floor; I really needed something low maintenance and hard-wearing.  I looked at the great choice of laminate flooring at Carpetright but in the end I decided to go for engineered wood. I know that I don’t want to be changing my flooring for a long time, so I need something long-lasting, durable and of course gorgeous!  Engineered wood floors look amazing and have a super-long warranty so I know mine will still look beautiful for years to come.  Plus, again a wooden floor is so versatile that I can redecorate around it, in fact completely change the look of the room, and it will always look stunning.  Engineered wood flooring really is a great investment if you’re looking for a long –term flooring solution and you can even sand the surface and re-stain and varnish if for some reason you want to change the colour.  I chose from the Kahrs range and again felt like a kid at Christmas – so much choice!  I decided on oak flooring as its classic styling was just what I was after. Oak is the most sought after (and expensive) flooring on the market and I can understand why.  It really is timeless and the finish achieved is hard to beat.  Oak engineered wood is a more economical way to get this look plus it is so much more practical and easy to maintain.  Just a sweep and a wipe with a well-wrung mop and it’s done.  Happy days!
