This month our House Envy feature is taking you on a tour of the home of Heather Young, an interiors journalist and blogger from Berkshire.
Where do you live (which town/city)?
I live in Wokingham, Berkshire, in a detached four-bed 1970s house with my husband and our 6-year-old twins.
Sum up your interior style in 3 words:
Eclectic, quirky, modern.
What is your favourite room in your home & why?
I think it’s probably our living room. Last year I painted one wall black, and it really transformed the space and has given the room a great focal point.
I put up a display on the wall which I love, and the black is the perfect backdrop for an old vintage leather armchair and sofa that we’ve owned for years and years. During the day the black adds drama to the space, and at night it makes it feel cosy and intimate.
What is your favourite object in your home & why?
What an impossible question to answer! It used to be my Philippe Starck Louis Ghost chair which was my leaving present from my first ever magazine job, and was the first designer item I owned, but I think that now it’s the old trunk that we use as a coffee table in the living room. It belonged to my grandmother, and has stickers and labels on it that date back to her childhood.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I used to cut out images I loved from magazines and stick them all into a scrapbook, but now I use Pinterest instead to collate the things that inspire me. I think my main source of inspiration comes from the homes and ideas I see shared on blogs and Instagram – whether its a tiny styling idea or a big room makeover.
What is your view on D.I.Y?
When I was growing up we always lived in wrecks of houses which my parents painstakingly renovated on a tiny budget, so DIY has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
That has meant that in turn, every home my husband and I have owned has also been a major renovation project, with most of the work done by ourselves. I’m lucky that my husband is very practical and loves getting his teeth into a DIY project – the bigger the better. Last year we even built a climbing wall in my son’s bedroom!
Whose home do you have House Envy of??
One of my best friends recently bought her first house. It’s not huge, but it’s a gorgeous little Victorian terraced house with bags of potential. I love that that sense of anticipation and excitement when you buy a new home, and you start to plan how you’re going to put your own stamp on it.
