When you think about how long you spend in your bed over a lifetime, you’ll realise that your mattress needs cleaning – just like everything else in your home.

Not only will this prevent a build up of dust and other allergens, it will also help to increase the lifespan of your mattress, giving you more years of comfort and great night’s sleeps to look forward to.

VACUUMING

Just like your carpet, your mattress will benefit from being vacuumed on a regular basis.

Ideally, you should be doing this every week to remove as much dead skin, mites and dust as you can. However it’s important to check the manufacturer’s instructions first as some don’t recommend vacuuming in case the mattress filling is disturbed.

SUNBATHING

If your mattress has been affected by damp or mildew, the best way to deal with it is to put it outside in the sunshine.

The warmth from the sun should remove any excess water, leaving your mattress dry, mould-free and nicely aired.

ODOURS

Unfortunately, odours can be difficult to remove from mattresses, your best option is to air the mattress outside and use an odour remover to get rid of the worst of the smell.

If the odour has been caused by a child wetting the bed, you can use an enzyme based cleaning product to break down the uric acid. Leaving baking soda on the mattress overnight before removing it with a vacuum cleaner can also help to remove odours. Please be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions first however.

MATTRESS PROTECTORS

The best way to prevent your mattress becoming damaged in the first place is to invest in a good quality mattress protector.

As these can normally be cleaned in the washing machine or taken to dry cleaners, they can help you to keep your mattress odour and stain free and in great condition.

As with many pieces of furniture around the house, the best way to clean a mattress is to do it regularly.

Cleaning stains as soon as they occur and vacuuming up the mites and dust will help to keep your mattress feeling newer for longer.
