Because plush carpets have a specially cut pile that gives a soft and luxurious feel underfoot, they require careful maintenance to keep them looking their best. It’s important you know what you need to do to look after them.

1) Research how to care for your carpet
Before purchasing a carpet, find out if it is stain resistant and whether it requires special treatment such as dry cleaning. Also check the length and conditions of the warranty.

2) Regular vacuuming
To ensure your plush carpet looks and feels as good as it can, ensure you remove any dirt and grime that may spoil the surface by thoroughly vacuuming at least twice a week.

Always move furniture to vacuum all areas of the room and use attachments and different settings to achieve the best results when vacuuming nooks and crannies.

3) Rotate heavy furniture
To prevent tables, chairs and sofas making permanent indentations in your carpet, move and rotate them regularly. This will help distribute the weight so that one area of your carpet doesn’t become overused. You only need to move your furniture a few inches each time.

4) Use recommended cleaning products
Check the care instructions for your carpet and only use the recommended cleaning products. Chemicals such as bleach should be kept well away from carpets and you should take extra care when clearing up spillages.

Always test a small, discreet patch of carpet with your chosen cleaning products before using on the whole surface in case it is not suitable.

5) Deal with spills quickly
To avoid discolouration or permanent staining, always blot a spillage immediately with kitchen towel and follow up with a recommended carpet cleaner. Use cold water and never rub or scrub the stain as this will force it into the fibres of the carpet.

6) Prevent fading
Leaving your curtains open all day whilst you are at work can actually lessen the vibrancy of your carpet’s colour or design. Ensure blinds are shut during the brightest part of the day to prolong the life of your flooring and prevent fading.

7) Doormats, mats and rugs
Prevent dirt from making its way onto your carpet by placing mats and rugs by doors to capture any mud or soil, especially if you are expecting visitors or have pets or children.

8) Consider a deep clean
A deep clean can help disinfect and sanitise carpets without the need for smelly chemicals. Consider renting high-powered water extraction equipment which will enable you to steam-clean your carpet much quicker than many traditional processes. Check care instructions on your carpet to make sure the steam won’t damage the colour or texture first though.

9) Keep sharp objects at bay
High heeled shoes, toys and furniture can damage a luxurious pile carpet by causing scuffs or snagging loose threads. Always take your shoes off at the door and regularly check the floor for loose threads that could cause problems.

Pet claws can also be a problem so make sure any pets have their claws regularly trimmed. Not allowing them into carpeted rooms when you’re not around can also help – as can ensuring they have access to toys and scratch posts which will keep them occupied and reduce the risk of them using your carpet as a plaything.

10) Invest in a professional clean
Splashing out on a professional clean just twice a year can turn back the clock on signs of wear and tear on your carpet and be a real investment.
