Your choice of bed and mattress will greatly affect how well you sleep and one historical study suggested that switching from an old bed to a new one could bring more sleep. If you want to get the perfect night’s rest in advance of this celebration then you need to decide whether it’s time to get a new bed or mattress. Here’s how.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED YOUR CURRENT BED?

Time flies and it’s easy to lose track of when you bought your current bed. The Sleep Council suggests 7 or 8 years can be the cut-off point for continued comfort but there are a few tell-tale signs to lookout for if you think your bed is in its final stages.

These include:

1. POOR QUALITY SLEEP

Your bed may still feel comfortable even though it’s lost the ability to support your body. Evaluate your sleep on a regular basis to see whether it’s time to buy a new mattress or bed. If aches, pains or stiffness are common features of your mornings then it’s probably time to upgrade.

2. BETTER SLEEP ELSEWHERE

Another indicator is to evaluate how well you sleep elsewhere. If you get a better night’s sleep in a different bed, such as the one in the guest room or at a relative’s house, then you should consider investing in something similar for your bedroom.

3. LUMPY MATTRESS

Take a good look at your mattress. Does it look used or worn? Is it lumpy? While mattress comfort is subjective, support is not. A soft mattress should still support your body so if yours is sagging in the middle then it may have lost its supportive structure and need replacing. Dislodged springs are another defect to look for and if you want to avoid this issue in the future then a memory foam mattress may be just what you need.

4. UNSTABLE BED FRAME

Similarly, examine the bed base, legs or castors to see whether they show signs of damage. If the frame is starting to lose stability then it’s important you invest in something new and robust.

5. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

Once you’ve decided it’s time for a new bed or mattress, you must pick the right one for you. There are many different options available and the best way to this work out is to try before you buy.
