We’ve all seen it in the movies – the protagonist falls asleep in the shop trying out a nice new king size mattress, and whilst it might be a well-worn cliché, you could do a lot worse than following their example!

In this guide, we take a look at the things you should be doing, and what you need to be looking out for when testing a new mattress, to ensure you get the right one.

You can look at firmness ratings, material choices, features and online reviews all day long, but the only way to know whether a mattress is right for you is to lie down on it!

Go to the showroom with an open mind, and be prepared to test as many mattresses as possible – you’re going to want to set aside at least a couple of hours! When testing mattresses, the aim is to replicate your own sleeping conditions as accurately as possible, so make sure you take your own pillows with you.

Start by testing a selection of different styles, materials and firmness ratings to help narrow down your selections a little.

Once you’ve tested a few, and found some that you think you like, the real test can begin. Take off your shoes, put your pillow down, and test each mattress for at least 10-15 minutes, lying in your normal sleeping positions. This will help to give you a more accurate picture of what each mattress feels like to actually sleep in.

For a comfortable, pain-free night’s sleep, your mattress needs to be able to support your body properly in a neutral position, with your spine naturally curved, and your head, shoulders, hips and feet nicely aligned.

If a mattress is too firm, it will start to push on these pressure points, causing discomfort and putting you out of position, and conversely, if it’s too soft, you won’t be properly supported and you’ll start to ‘flop’ down into the mattress. Both scenarios can disrupt sleep, and lead to you waking up in the morning with aches and pains.

On a perfect mattress, you should feel gentle support, but no pressure – almost as if you’re floating on air.

Your mattress is a long-term investment with a realistic lifespan of 10 years, and something you’re going to be using virtually every single night. In fact, you’ll be spending somewhere between ¼ and 1/3 of your life in it – so it’s best not to compromise for the sake of a few pounds if you value your sleep.

The most comfortable mattress for you might not be the most expensive, but pushing the boat out to get the mattress you want can pay dividends in the long run, in terms of both the quality and quantity of sleep you’ll get for the next decade!
