As we get older, our needs change, and this affects everything, including how well we sleep. Thankfully, getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up on a good night’s sleep – as long as you’ve got the right bed.
In this post, we take a look at how our bodies, sleeping patterns and requirements change as we age, and the impact this has when it comes to choosing the right bed and mattress.
CHANGES IN SLEEP PATTERNS
As we get older, our sleeping patterns begin to change, both in terms of the amount of sleep we need, and the kind of sleep we get.
We need more sleep as we get older, spend less time in the ‘deep sleep’ part of the sleeping cycle, and often, wake up more in the night.
All this makes it extra important to get a bed and mattress combination that’s comfortable and supportive enough to provide a good night’s sleep.
SUPPORTING YOUR BODY
As our bodies age, many of us start to suffer from bad backs, muscular aches and joint pains, and having the right mattress can make a huge difference to managing these symptoms, reducing pain and ultimately help us sleep better.
To relieve pain, a mattress needs to be able to support your body properly, working with the natural curvature of your spine whilst cushioning your body.
If a mattress is too firm, it will put unnecessary pressure on your joints, causing pain, and if it’s too soft, you will sink into it too far, and won’t get the support you need to be comfortable.
The right memory foam and pocket sprung mattresses that move with your body can provide a good solution for some older people, but everyone’s body is different.
FINDING THE RIGHT POSITION – ADJUSTABLE BEDS
If you find you’re tossing and turning, or you need to change position more regularly than you used to, then you might want to take a look at an adjustable bed.
Adjustable beds come supplied with a controller that enables you to adjust the shape, height and angle of the bed, so that you can find the perfect, comfortable sleeping position, and easily change it whenever you need to.
An adjustable bed is also great if you like to spend time reading, relaxing or watching television, as the bed can be raised into a range of different positions, providing you with excellent support when sitting up.
It can also be helpful when you need to get in and out of bed, helping you to get into the right position without straining.
CHANGES IN YOUR PREFERENCE
Time waits for no man (or women), and our bodies change constantly throughout our lives. This has a knock on effect when choosing a mattress – one that would have been perfect for you 5 years ago might not be suitable today.
However old you are, when purchasing a new mattress, it’s important to go in with an open mind. You might already have preconceptions about firmness ratings, materials and features, but it’s best to leave them at the door of the showroom.
Thoroughly test as many mattresses as you can, spending at least 10-15 minutes lying in your usual sleeping position before you buy.
WHEN IT’S TIME TO CHANGE
Mattresses tend to stay hidden underneath sheets and duvets, and it can be difficult to know when to change them. A good mattress will typically last between 5 – 10 years before it starts to deteriorate and needs replacing.
Waking up feeling stiff, achy or tired, and struggling to get comfortable in bed aren’t just signs of getting older – they’re also a great indicator that your mattress isn’t right for you!
If your mattress is visibly sagging, lumpy or dented, then it’s definitely time to invest in a new one.
GETTING IN AND OUT OF BED
One of the biggest challenges facing older people with limited mobility can be getting in and out of bed.
Whilst an adjustable bed can be an effective solution, there are also a few accessories available that are designed to work with a full range of modern bed frames and divans.
From simple grab handles and lifting poles that attach to the frame, to bed raising technology that works with your divan, there are loads of options available that will help to reduce discomfort and the risk of falling.
If you struggle to get out of bed, then going for a slightly higher bed frame and mattress can also help.
