The start of a new year is the perfect time to start afresh and embrace new ideas. As 2016 is a leap year and tradition dictates that things are turned on their heads, it seems there’s no better time to start doing things a little differently.

No room in your home is a more personal reflection of yourself than your bedroom, so every week this month we’ll be discussing DIY with a difference – showing you how you can set your bedroom apart from the rest and Do it Differently to make a unique space that speaks volumes about your personality.

It’s no surprise that the bed is usually the star of the show when it comes to bedroom decor, but we’d like to show you how to make the whole room something to be proud of. From the floor, walls and lighting, to the ceiling, furniture and accessories, there’s no reason why every aspect of your bedroom can’t all be amazing and one of a kind.

This week we’re kicking off with quirky, off the wall, wacky ways to use flooring in the boudoir.

New ways to use carpet tiles

Carpet tiles don’t all have to be the same colour or shape, and they don’t even have to be on the floor! A funky look can be created by thinking outside of the box and using flooring in unconventional ways.

Try cutting carpet or carpet tiles to create a cool geometric pattern, or use them on the walls or ceiling for a totally different interior design.

Champion Cord Plain Carpet

For a really wonderfully wacky look, you could even use an unconventional carpet design on your floor or walls and cater to the wishes of your inner child whilst making a bold and modern style statement. This cool road map pattern kids carpet would make a brilliant quirky feature in a grownup bedroom!

Is one rug ever really enough?

Put together a fantastically eclectic look by using more than one beautiful rug in your room. There’s no reason why just one small area of your flooring should be fabulous, so try taking the plunge into pattern and make full use of the space by filling it with things that you love.

Vinyl in the bedroom – It’s not as cold as you might think!

Most people opt for plush carpets in the bedroom, so if you want to do something different, try smooth flooring instead. Vinyl is not only smart and stylish, it’s also soft underfoot, so you don’t have to worry about getting cold feet in the mornings.

Vinyl flooring also comes in a huge array of amazing patterns and designs to make your bedroom stand out from the crowd.

Mix it up with different types of flooring

This is one of our favourite ideas; different flooring types can be used to add a whole new dimension to your room. A combination of carpet and smooth flooring like laminate or vinyl is a great way to bring a room to life.

Why not try sectioning off your room into different areas with your bed on plush carpet, and the dressing table on a beautiful smooth flooring? Not only does this look great, it also gives you the best of both worlds as you can sink your bare feet into soft carpet as you get out of bed, but don’t risk staining your floor with makeup when a clumsy accident occurs.
