Imagine lying on the deck of a little boat in an island cove – above you a cloudless sky, below you the crystal clear turquoise waters. Both these shades are key to one of the most classic summer looks for interiors. Known as azure blue, the colour of summer skies creates an instant feeling of sunshine and holidays, so here are our tips for introducing it into your home.
Living with blue
Adding blue to a living room will create a summery feel reminiscent of Greek island style. Blue and crisp white is a classic combination, so white walls and blue accessories is the way to go. Cushions in a mix of solid blue and dip-dyed inky indigo will give the scheme depth. Lots of stores have rustic-style blue and white ceramics this summer, which will add to the laid-back Mediterranean look that works best with this colour scheme. Want to create a real impact? A blue carpet will add brightness to a plain room and goes well too with existing stone and neutral colour schemes.
As a watery, calming space, blue and bathrooms go perfectly together. There are lots of areas of the bathroom where adding a bright blue can really lift an standard all-white scheme. Blue glass mosaic tiles – either on a full wall or as a border detail – add some of the light-reflecting sparkle of the sea, while relaying a vinyl floor in a bright blue will add warmth and brightness while providing a hard-wearing, practical element. If you don’t want to invest in long-term decorating here, then a simple blue shower curtain or towels and accessories will bring a welcome blast of summer for mere pounds. And if you’re lucky enough to have a roll-top bath then we love the idea of painting the outside in an enamel bath paint in bright blue – you’ll feel like you’re floating away on a calm sea!
Blue for bedrooms
Out of all your rooms, the bedroom should be a soft, soothing space where you have space to dream. Create a version of a seaside paradise by dressing bedroom windows with light voile curtains that will billow in the (sea) breeze. Mix white and sky blue drapes at the same window for a relaxed look, or add a solid blue blind to an existing window. Again remember how well blue and white work together when it comes to choosing bed linen. Mix your standard white sheets and duvet cover with some cool blue pillows on which to rest your head, and add some texture with a wool throw in a bright azure shade. For a more urban take, look out for the many digital image prints of sea and sky that are appearing on duvets this season. Anchor all this with some sky blue on the floor too – white floorboards will be wonderfully enhanced with a rug, either plain, striped blue or a floral print. And if you’re feeling really bold why not add a wall-mural or outsized print? Look online for classic images of Miami swimming pools and other watery scenes that would look great on a feature wall or behind the bed to create a feature ‘headboard’.
