It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but from time to time, it’s important to unwind, relax, and have some you time. August 15th is National Relaxation Day – a celebration of winding down and taking things easy.
With this year’s event falling on a Saturday, there’s never been a better time to take a load off and relax with help from our top chill out tips.
Unlock your inner child
Who said colouring books were just for kids?
This National Relaxation Day, why not unleash your inner child, and rediscover the joy of colouring in with an adult colouring book. Adult colouring books are fantastic for fighting stress, and they’re becoming more and more popular with people looking for a therapeutic, calming and creative downtime activity.
Lose yourself in a good book
Reading is one of the best ways to relax, and tests have shown it can cut your stress levels by two thirds. You don’t even have to read for very long – you’ll start to reap the relaxation benefits in as little as 6 minutes!
According to recent studies, reading fiction is best for relaxation. Fictional stories actively engage your imagination and stimulate your creativity, causing you to enter a different state of consciousness, and helping you to escape the stresses of everyday life.
Go for a walk
Light exercise like walking isn’t just great for your physical wellbeing – it’s also fantastic for relaxation and mental health, and capable of cutting your stress levels by over 40%. If the sun is shining on Saturday 15th August, then why not make the most of it by going for a nice afternoon stroll with your friends or family.
Recharge your relationships
With today’s hectic lifestyles, it’s easy to lose touch with people who you were once close to. Rekindling old relationships and reminiscing about happy times spent together is great for lifting your mood, cutting your stress levels, and reminding you about the important things in life. Why not go for lunch or a cup of tea/coffee with someone you haven’t seen for a while? It will do you the world of good.
Stay in bed
Lie-ins are officially good for you (check out our post earlier in the year for national bed month if you don’t believe us)!
In addition to helping you clear away your sleep debt after a busy week, treating yourself to a good lie in will help to improve your memory function, mental wellbeing and physical health. A comfy bed is also one of the best places to relax and de-stress.
When it comes to sleep, quality is as important as quantity, which is why it’s so important to have the right bed. If your mattress is tired and saggy, or you struggle to get to sleep, then it may be time to buy a new bed – you’ll be amazed at just how much difference it can make.
