We're seeing a full-scale revival of the resourceful nature of our grandparents as the 'make do and mend' mantra has been well and truly hijacked by designers all over the globe. Previously unloved and unfashionable items are taken lovingly by their worn out handles and thrown back into the spotlight – transformed into desirable interior delights.
Artistic and Ethical
For the bold and the brave, try restoring old chairs in a time-honoured way – choose bold silk screen printed linear for the most beautiful of restoration projects.

Those who are a little less 'Llweleyn-Bowen' can simply choose smaller items to personalise (of which there are many!) Cushions are crying out for ruching, pleating, applique flowers or tiny rows of mismatching buttons, whilst mirrors across the UK are getting that added sparkle as untrained fingers are adorning small pieces of round edged glass to their surrounds. For fantastic transformations underfoot, try a striking wood effect laminate or vinyl to give a rustic look, or add a sumptuous thick pile carpet to add warmth to any room.
Simply 'Glassic' Decoration
One of the most simple effects comes from the collection of vintage bottles from car boots or flea markets – use them as flower vases – fill them with brightly coloured blooms to bring an understated elegance to casual summer tea parties and picnics or to add a touch of romantic whimsy to more formal events.
Designer tip:
Did you know?
Rust-Oleum makes a base coat primer that is magnetic? Use it on your own homemade inspiration board or transform that vintage tray into a note board or a place to display photographs.
As one of the hottest places to spot upcoming trends, The London Design Festival recently included the 'Eco Age - Re-Lux Exhibition' – an exciting exhibition based around luxury and waste. Highlights included a glass chandelier and bowls made out of recycled toughened glass which were saved from landfill, a chair made purely with cardboard reels, bedside tables rescued from skips and elegantly up-cycled using buttons and an elegant bag by Regenesi made with recycled leather. High-end designers are finally embracing the idea of recycling. Have a go yourself, the results may just surprise you!
Upcycling ‐ Complete the Look:
Once you've chosen your beautiful, adorned, upcycled items ‐ balance them with simple flooring – neutral thick carpets or classic polished laminate. Show off colourful pieces by tempering them with white walls and clean lines.
