In praise
of pattern!
I'm sure you'll be aware that pattern is back in fashion for home décor. The recent trend for patterned furniture, furnishings and accessories started with fantastic new wallpaper designs, then sofa collections got revamped with funky fabric designs and now our passion for pattern has filtered down to the floor.
A common concern about decorating using several differently patterned products is that it can be tricky to know how to create a pleasing balance...rather than a disjointed mish-mash!
So here are a few tips to get you started:
• Try selecting just one colour to feature in the background of all the patterned products you put in your room e.g. cream, white, grey, soft green, chocolate, black etc... This single background colour will help to create a co-ordinating link between all of the different patterns you choose to sit next to each other in your room. But remember that choosing a very dark colour can make a room look smaller
• Include a variety of different pattern sizes -
small, medium & large to create a balanced look and a natural flow around your room
• If you want to add an additional pattern into
your rooms décor but you aren't sure what to choose remember that a simple stripe, polka dot or check will work with most other patterns
• Incorporate some plain, semi-plain or textured products into your decorating scheme, to give a visual rest from the pattern. Simply select the same plain colours of your patterned products to provide balance.
